Willard graduated from DeKalb High School, class of 1960.  He attended Augustana College and later graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1966 with a B.A. in Economics.  He earned his Juris Doctorate from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Willard began his law career at Jordan, Akemann & Miles until he launched his own Elgin firm in the mid 1970s.  Throughout his career, he held all offices in the Elgin Bar Association.

Willard shared 52 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Donna Widerberg (nee Coan), and together they raised one son, Ryan.  He was so excited when Ryan was born, exclaiming “He looks like a miniature human!”  Ryan has fond memories of playing baseball together and taking family road trips across the country.

Loved ones will remember Willard as honest and hardworking yet easygoing.  He was always willing to go out of the way for clients and friends alike.   He had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed joking and teasing friends.

In his free time, Willard was an avid Chicago White Sox fan, a lover of old movies and songs, and loved fishing and horseracing.  He also had a 40-year tradition of playing poker with the same group of buddies. He was also a member of the Elgin Elks Club and played with the NADs softball team for 20 years.

Some of his fondest memories came from his father earning the national Teacher of the Year Award.  As a result, Willard had the opportunity to meet Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon when his father received the award and later accompanied him to the White House to meet President George W. Bush at an anniversary celebration held in 2008.
