Thomas “Tom” Michael Kernan, age 77, of Algonquin, IL, previously from Hillside, IL passed away at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, IL on March 30, 2020. Tom was born November 30, 1942 in Chicago to his loving parents, John and Jean Kernan (Brezina).

Tom graduated from Proviso West High School, Class of 1961. He served his country as a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, 1963-1967, earning his Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon.

Tom went on to be a life-long tinkerer and “fixer,” working as an airplane mechanic for Seaboard, Flying Tigers, and FedEx, from where he retired.  Tom worked nights most of his life, so he could have more time to spend with his family.

Tom took advantage of the perks of affordable stand-by flights as an airline employee, taking his family on many memorable adventures together, often to unexpected destinations.  Vacations were always a journey with unplanned experiences around every corner. In addition to air travel, Tom enjoyed a classic road trip and long camping trips with his family.

Tom met the love of his life, Sandy, at work, and together they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage. Loved ones admired their strong bonds and example of unrelenting devotion to one another. They also shared wonderful memories dancing and just living in the moment together.

Loved ones will remember Tom’s generous heart. He was an active volunteer, making popcorn for Mike’s track meets, coaching soccer for Lisa and Nancy, and serving with the friends of the Hillside Library.  Tom always dropped everything to help someone in need without a second thought, even strangers.

In his later years, Tom treasured time with his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.

Tom was preceded in death by his siblings Jack Kernan, Bob & (Marlene) Kernan, Mary Koskosky, Dolores & (Dick) Hrody, and Denis Kernan.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; his children, Michael (Wendy) Kernan, Lisa (Johnny) Gonzalez, and Nancy (Oscar) Carmona; grandchildren Ryan Kernan, Elena Kernan, Yiseli, Johnny and Logan Gonzalez, and Leonardo Carmona; sibling Betty Kuba, Sister in laws Beata Kernan & Loretta Kernan, Brother in Law Frank Koskosky, and many adored nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Final arrangements entrusted to Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St., Elgin IL 60120. For more information call 847-741-1128 or visit www.symondsmadisonfuneralhome.com.
