Stanley Karkusiewicz, age 96, of Elgin, passed away December 14, 2016 at Presence St. Joseph Hospital. Stanley was born near Leipzig, Germany on July 12, 1920 to Mr. and Mrs. Jozef Karkusiewicz.
Stanley grew up in Charleroi, Belgium, where he completed normal schooling and machine trade school. He served in the Belgian Army and survived five years as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II. After emigrating to the United States, Stanley worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for twenty years.
He was married to the love of his life, Adelajda, for 48 years. They met through their mothers, who were both close friends. Stanley took pride in his appearance, and always made sure he looked like a businessman going to and from work.
Stanley was a very strong man, who survived prostate, colon, skin and thyroid cancers. Oftentimes, when he was upset, he had an evil grin, and people mistook it for a smile. In his free time, Stanley enjoyed woodworking, making birdhouses and walking.
Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, Adelajda, and his sister.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph S. Karkusiewicz and Daniel S. Karkusiewicz, and many nieces and nephews.
Services and interment will be private. Arrangements entrusted to Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin. For more information call 847-741-1128 or visit www.symondsmadisonfuneralhome.com
