Peter James Bilder, age 77, of Joliet, passed away March 15, 2018 at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Peter was born August 16, 1940 in Chicago, IL to his loving parents, James Peter and Marina Bilder (nee Fakles).
Following high school graduation, Peter served his country as a Private First Class with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War (1963-1965), where he worked as a Clerk and earned two awards: Sharpshooter (Rifle M-1) and Marksman (Carbine).
Peter enjoyed being a grandfather and spending time with his grandsons. He was a huge baseball fan and maintained an extensive collection of baseball cards and sports memorabilia. In his free time he enjoyed playing golf with his son Matthew,spending time at the racetrack and OTB, listening to Jazz, smoking cigars and drinking a good Scotch.
Peter is survived by his children, Matthew (Gina) Bilder and Nicole (Joel Herger) Bilder; grandchildren Anthony Herger, 15, and Aiden Herger, 12; siblings Nick Bilder and Ann Helopolus; and nieces Diane Jakovich and Marina Burman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Joliet Public Library in memory of Peter Bilder. Peter was an avid reader all his life and since he was unable to own an extensive library he utilized his public library on a regular basis. Visitation will be Thursday 5-9:00 p.m. March 22, 2018 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin IL 60120. Interment will be Private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
