Odessa Smalec, of Streamwood, passed away June 10, 2019 at AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. She was born January 11, 1941 to her loving parents, John and Bessie Taylor (Offutt).

Odessa married the love of her life, Ronald Smalec, in May 1994, after meeting him at the EverReady Battery Sales office. They enjoyed traveling to Kenosha together. Odessa loved her family deeply and treasured time with them.

Odessa retired after working for more than 25 years as an insurance claims adjuster.

Loved ones will remember her caring heart, wonderful sense of humor and talent with numbers.  She enjoyed spending time in nature and appreciated the trees and birdwatching, as long as no snakes were around!

Odessa’s biggest passion was serving Jehovah and teaching others.  She was passionate about witnessing to others by any means such as door to door, phone witnessing and letter writing.  She graduated Pioneer School in 2005, and pioneered for five years. During her many years of service to Jehovah, she had the privilege of aiding several people into the truth.  Everyone was amazed by her impeccable recollection of the scriptures!

We will remember the game nights at moms, the laughs and the constant spiritual encouragement. She refused to allow everyday life to keep her from speaking with her family. She made sure we all stayed in touch despite life’s anxieties. We thought we had so much time left with her and we were wrong. So now, we will persevere in our service to Jehovah and continue to push forward so we can see her again in paradise where she will be reunited with her loving husband, family and friends. We will miss her deeply.

Odessa was preceded in death by her four brothers, Elmor, John, James and Isaiah.

Odessa is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Smalec; her daughter Lisa (Victor) Carr; siblings Murdis (Devon) Higginbotham and Joseph (Betty) Taylor; grandchildren Crystal (Abraham) Soto and Careese (Cory) LaRoss; great-grandchildren Anisa Soto, Jordan LaRoss, Jaiden LaRoss, Julian Soto, Marisa Soto, and Preston LaRoss; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held 6:00-9:00p.m. Friday June 21, 2019 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1320 Rodenburg Rd, Schaumburg, IL 60193.  Interment will be private.
