Mary Frances Pollack, age 99, of Chicago, passed away two days after her 99th birthday, on March 22, 2014. Mary was born March 20, 1915 to John and Frances Niziolek.
Mary earned her RN certification from Bellevue School of Nursing. She then worked at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, NY from 1937 to 1942.
In 1942, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a nurse in the U.S. and England during World War II., until 1946.
Following her military service, Mary earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University.
Throughout her nursing career, Mary worked at NYC Health & Hospitals, Menninger Clinic and Westside Veterans Medical Center (Now Jesse Brown VA Medical Center).
Mary married Dr. Seymour Pollack, after the two met while working at Westside Veterans Medical Center. They were married on June 27, 1955 and shared 31 years of marriage until his passing in 1986.
Mary valued her independence above all else. She lived at home through the end of her life, never having to move into a nursing facility, even at age 99. She was especially proud of being a WWII Veteran and liked to describe her service as Navy Nurse with friends and fellow Veterans.
She valued spending time with her beloved cats, Bandera, Cesar, Cheyenne, and Cupid. During her last 48 hours, Bandera kept vigil at her bedside and would wait for her to come back after she passed away.
The family would like to thank Seasons Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care and their staff for providing compassionate care for Mary at home. Thank you also to Mulu Ocbamicael, Candace Robertson, Brittany Simms, Kristina Hernandez, Natalie Ott, Jayme Noeske, and Dr Amir Shanan for their help and support during Mary’s later years.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Seymour Pollack; her siblings, Michael (Alice), Louise (Gordon), Virginia (Jake), Genny (James), Jane (Henry), and John and Brother-In-Law Irving (Renee) Pollack; and cousins Stanley Mis and Wanda Mis.
Mary is survived by her devoted daughter Ann Pollack; nieces and nephews Patricia (David), Dennis (Sissy), Charlie (Cindy) and Nancy (Bob); and her loyal cats, Bandera, Cesar, Cheyenne, and Cupid.
Committal ceremony with full military honors will be 1:30p.m. Tuesday September 15, 2020 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd., Elwood, IL 60421.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Paws Chicago, would be appreciated.
