Stephen Craig Blackwell, affectionately known as Steve, departed this life on December 26, 2023, at the age of 72, within the peaceful surroundings of his home in Anza, California. Born to the late Louis Harriet Smith and under the watchful eye of his maternal grandmother, Margaret "Polly" Smith, on November 29, 1951, in Elgin, Illinois, Steve was a man whose presence was marked by an unwavering zest for life, an appreciation for the natural world, and a tender heart for all creatures.

A proud 1970 graduate of Elgin High School, Steve went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Air Force, embodying a spirit of patriotism and duty. His post-military life led him to reside in New Orleans and later San Francisco, where he honed his skills in telecommunications intelligence. It was in San Francisco that Steve's life was enriched by the companionship of his beloved life partner, Brett, with whom he shared a profound and enduring love.

Seeking tranquility and the beauty of nature, Steve and Brett made a conscious decision to retire to the serene "upper desert" of Anza, California, where Steve spent the last 30 years of his life in blissful retirement, enveloped by the picturesque California desert landscape.

Steve's memory is cherished by his brother, Jeff Blackwell, and sister-in-law, Maija Kemper, as well as his sister, Diana Blackwell. He was predeceased by his devoted mother and grandmother.

A service to celebrate Steve's and Brett’s lives will be held at 12:00pm, Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Reverend Tim Perry will be officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects and share in the remembrance of a life well-lived.

Interment with military honors will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Boulevard, Elgin, IL 60120.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish to express sympathy consider honoring a life characterized by compassion, generosity, and a deep appreciation for the bonds of family and friendship by making a donation as a gesture of love in Steve's memory to a charity of their choosing.
