Norma Sleeman Obituary

Norma Jean “Mickey” Sleeman, age 93, of Elgin, IL, passed away on March 19, 2024. She was born September 4, 1930 in St. Charles, IL to her loving parents, William and Viola (née Schulz) DeHart.

Mickey graduated from St. Charles High School, Class of 1948, then took classes at North Central College in Naperville. She did clerical work for both the Lung Association and Sherman Hospital.

Mickey married her husband Donald Sleeman on October 15, 1949, and they celebrated 72 years of marriage together before his death in 2021. She was her husband’s “right hand.” In addition to working full-time, she was there to take care of the house and their four children. She also supported all of his civic and voluntary involvement. They took many trips together, including to Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and England, as well as many road trips.

Mickey enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and loved playing the slot machines. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57 for 68 years, where she served many offices, including President.

Mickey was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lowell DeHart; husband, Donald J. Sleeman; and grandsons, Jose and Juan “Ricky” Ramirez.

She is survived by her children, William (Rosemary) Sleeman, Mark (Susan) Sleeman, Patti (Jose) Ramirez, and Barbara (Richard) Beckman; sister, Darlene Green; daughter-in-law, Mary Fisher; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10:00am until funeral service at 1:00pm, Monday, March 25, 2024 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Michael J. Murschel will be officiating.
