John Paul Real, age 73, of Elgin, IL, passed away on October 6, 2025. He was born August 26, 1952 in Elgin, IL to his loving parents, Robert and Lois (née Beckman) Real.

The third of eight children, John grew up surrounded by family and laughter. A graduate of St. Edward High School, he carried his strong sense of duty and camaraderie into his life’s work and service.

At the age of 19, John enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication were recognized with numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Sharpshooter National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Overseas Bars, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

Following his military service, John continued to serve his country through his work with the Department of the Navy, where his discipline and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

John will be remembered for his contagious laugh, his generous heart, and the way he could brighten any room simply by being in it. To his family and friends, he was a constant source of warmth, humor, and unwavering loyalty.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Cora May Real; siblings, Ted (Pam) Real, Janet Real-Miller, Karen Bassler, Jim (Vicky) Real, Andy (Doreen) Real, Liz Real, and Patty (Craig) Lamp; aunt, Mary Beckman; and uncle, Bill Beckman.

Mass with full military honors will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, October 16, 2025, at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 225 Jewett Street, Elgin, IL 60123.  Fr. Camacho will be officiating. (For those who are unable to attend Mass on Thursday, a memorial visitation is being held from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, with service at 3:00pm, Monday, October 13, 2025, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.)

John will be interred at 10:00am, Friday, October 17, 2025, at Ft. Sheridan National Cemetery, Vattman Road, Lake Bluff, IL 60044.
