Walter Richard Shales

Walter Richard Shales Sr., age 100, of Elgin, IL, passed away on February 19, 2025. He was born April 19, 1924 in Elgin, IL to his loving parents, Glen and Lena (née Bauman) Shales.

Walter spent his entire life in Elgin, IL. He was a World War II veteran, a sergeant in the United States Army. Walter was known to some as “Mr. Goodroof.” His favorite hobby was gardening; many knew him from the beautiful flower gardens at his home.

On April 10, 2024, Walter was granted a proclamation by the City of Elgin celebrating his 100 years in Elgin. He was fortunate to have a beautiful 100th birthday celebration at the Riverview Rehabilitation Center on April 19, 2024, which was attended by many.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna Shales; brothers, Russ, Glen (Bud), and Gary Shales; niece, Stacy Shales; and nephew, Larry Grimes. He is survived by his three children, Cindy Lee (Rick) Valentine, Walter Richard (Pat) Shales Jr., and Kimberly Grace Higgins; grandchildren, Walter Richard Shales III, Antoinette Mary (David) Ugarte, and Cameron Higgins; great-grandson Gavin Walter Ugarte; brother, Monroe (Butch) Shales; and sisters, Gloria Rigoni, Norma Shales, and Vickie (Horst) Fiebig; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and many friends and extended family.

Walter was loved and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A memorial will be held from 12:00pm until funeral service with military honors at 4:00pm, Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.

Interment will be private.
