Scott Allen Toppel, age 50, of Elgin, IL, passed away on October 31, 2022, with his partner, Gregg Hagen, by his side. Scott was born June 12, 1972 in Elmhurst, IL to his loving parents, Harold and Karla (née Hotettler) Toppel. He graduated from Willowbrook High School, Class of 1990.
Scott lived his too-short life to the fullest with more than 2,000 skydiving jumps, a knockout standup comedy performance, historically accurate portrayals of local characters in the Bluff City Cemetery Walk, and an audition for The Voice. Scott’s greatest achievement was the deep, enduring friendships from every stage of his life: Scott’s high school group, FedEx family, and nearly everyone who knew him and was charmed by his dry wit.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Carl and Rosa Belle Hostettler, and Fred and Betty Toppel; and his loyal dog, Thunder. He is survived by his loving partner, Gregg Hagen; dear sister, Tammy (Paul) Toppel Chmelik; niece, Karli Chmelik; nephew, Patrick Chmelik; and countless friends who were like family to Scott. He also left behind his beloved dogs, Hank and Emma.
Visitation will be 11:00am until funeral service at 1:30pm, Sunday, November 6, 2022 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Elgin History Museum, 360 Park Street. Light snacks will be served.
