Salvatore Richard Lawrence Dirubbo, affectionately known as Larry, was born on September 24, 1947, in Peekskill, New York to his loving parents, Salvatore and Mary (née Stellato) Dirubbo. He passed away January 9, 2025 at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of passion, creativity, and love.
Larry grew up in Peekskill, where he developed a deep interest in airplanes. He pursued his education in Boston, graduating with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown of Buchanan, New York, where he began a distinguished career at New York Bell. Larry later transferred to AT&T in New Jersey, where his brilliance as an engineer shone through in the many products he designed throughout his career.
A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Larry inherited his love for flying from his father's passion for seaplanes. He became a skilled pilot, flying Cessnas and dedicating countless hours to his hobby. Larry's fascination with flight extended to building RC model airplanes, a pursuit in which he excelled. He was actively involved in numerous flying clubs, often taking on leadership roles and sharing his love for the hobby with others.
In addition to aviation, Larry had a keen interest in slot cars, creating a custom-built track in the basement of his home where he would host racing events with friends. His diverse interests also included rebuilding a 1965 Corvette from scrap and taking up target shooting, showcasing his talent for mastering new skills.
Larry’s life took a joyful turn when he and his wife adopted a baby girl, Ana, from Poland, who became a cherished part of his life. He embraced fatherhood with love and dedication, ensuring that she knew the warmth and support of a caring family.
Throughout his life, Larry was known for his gregarious personality, always ready to lend a hand or share a story. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Ana Mariel Dirubbo, and his brother, Donald Dirubbo. He was preceded in death by both his parents.
Larry leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
