Ella era la joven detrás del mostrador en la tienda familiar, y él era el encantador joven que la visitaba todos los días, tratando de ganarse su corazón. Incluso después de que Asunción se mudara a Chicago en 1978, su corazón seguía en México con Maria Luisa. Su conexión creció a través de cartas, llamadas a larga distancia y las simples, pero profundas palabras de un joven que sabía que había encontrado el amor de su vida. Le pidió que fuera su novia por teléfono, y poco después, con la ayuda de su madre, pidió su mano en matrimonio. El 26 de diciembre de 1980 se casaron, y Maria Luisa se unió a Asunción en Chicago, comenzando un hermoso capítulo de sus vidas juntos.

En los años que siguieron, Maria Luisa y Asunción criaron a tres hijos, Nancy, Tony y Nelly, primero en Streamwood, IL, y luego se establecieron en Elgin, IL, donde construyeron una vida llena de risas, amor y unidad. Born on April 30, 1957, in Mexico to her beloved parents, Jose Martinez Ortega and Juana Herrera Moreno, Maria Luisa’s heart was always as vibrant as her spirit.

Her love story began in Nuevo Laredo, where she met her future husband, Asuncion. She was the girl behind the counter at the family’s store, and he was the charming young man who would visit every day, trying to win her heart. Even after Asuncion moved to Chicago in 1978, his heart remained in Mexico with Maria Luisa. Their connection grew through letters, long-distance calls, and the simple yet profound words of a young man who knew he had found the love of his life. He asked her to be his girlfriend over the phone, and soon after, with his mother’s help, he asked for her hand in marriage. On December 26, 1980, they were married, and Maria Luisa joined Asuncion in Chicago, beginning a beautiful chapter of their lives together.

In the years that followed, Maria Luisa and Asuncion raised three children, Nancy, Tony, and Nelly, first in Streamwood, IL, and later settling in Elgin, IL, where they built a life filled with laughter, love, and unity. The family remained close-knit, with every weekend dedicated to game nights, good food, and endless joy. It was these moments—these simple, cherished times—that made Maria Luisa the heart of her family.

Maria Luisa had a zest for life that was truly unmatched. She adored shopping, collecting perfumes, and the thrill of a game of Loteria or Rummikub. The sound of slot machines in a casino or the rhythm of a cumbia were sure to bring a smile to her face, but nothing made her heart sing more than cooking for her family, doting on her grandchildren, and hosting gatherings that filled the room with love and laughter. She was the glue that held her family together, the matriarch who kept them united through it all.

Above all, Maria Luisa was the most loving, beautiful woman, with a heart so big it could not be measured. Her warmth, kindness, and generosity knew no bounds. Her family was everything to her, and she was everything to them.

Maria Luisa leaves behind her husband, Asuncion; her children, Nancy (Jorge), Tony (Cristina), and Nelly (Luis); her siblings, Carmen (Isidro), Paulino, Concepcion, Martin (Ludivina), Juan, Julio, and Francisca; her beloved grandchildren, Ebely, Ilario, Amelia, Abel, and the twin boys expected in 2025; and a large, loving family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her memory will live on in every family gathering, in every laugh shared, and in the hearts of all those who loved her. Maria Luisa’s spirit will forever guide and surround her family, reminding them that love is the greatest gift of all.

Mass will be at 1:00pm, Saturday, December 21, 2024 at St. Mary Church of Elgin, 400 Fulton Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Rev. Lisandro Cristancho will be officiating.

Visitation will be 5:00pm to 9:00pm, with a funeral service at 7:00pm, Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.

Interment will be private.
