Hans Jochiam Brodde, age 86, of Elgin, IL, passed away on February 21, 2022. He was born July 27, 1935 in Neustettin, Germany to his loving parents, Paul and Kaethe (née Drews) Brodde.

Hans emigrated to the United States with his family in 1950. He apprenticed as painter, decorator, and paper hanger, and then worked as a painter, with Painters District Union 30, for many years before retiring in 1989, earning the nickname “Paintbrush.”

Hans met Janet Schmicker in 1958 when he worked for her father, the late Henry E. Schmicker. They were married for 63 years before her passing in September, 2021.

Hans was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed fishing in Whitewater Lake, WI on summer weekends. He taught the art of fishing to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Elgin Turner Club, where he introduced his children to gymnastics. In his free time, he enjoyed watching Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy, old westerns and war movies, James Bond, Law and Order, Wheel of Fortune, the Olympics, and soccer.

Hans was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janet L. Brodde (née Schmicker); daughter, Connie Barnes; and brother, Harry Brodde. He is survived by his children, Julie Mason, Scott Brodde, and Jay Brodde; brother, Echard (Theresa) Brodde; grandsons, Adam and Aaron Barnes of Florida; sister-in-law, Martha Brodde; and 22 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10:00am until funeral service at 11:45am, Monday, March 14, 2022 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Michael Murschel will be officiating.
