Elisabeth “Betsy” Joyce Thrasher, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025. She was born October 19, 1941 to her loving parents, John and Catherine Joyce. Betsy lived a life of purpose, passion, and service—dedicated to helping others, advocating for social justice, and loving her family deeply.

Betsy's professional life was spent uplifting others. She served over 30 years as a school social worker in School District U-46, primarily at Tefft and Hillcrest schools in Elgin, Illinois. Earlier in her career, she counseled pregnant teens and taught sexual education in schools with high pregnancy rates—work that reflected her deep commitment to education, empowerment, and compassionate care.

Outside of work, Betsy led a rich and vibrant life. She found joy in bird watching, gardening, reading, and attending political rallies. She was a proud member of the League of Women Voters and an active congregant of the Unitarian Church, always engaged in causes close to her heart. Her strong sense of justice, deep empathy, and quick wit made her someone others gravitated toward and admired.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Joyce; and her beloved husband, Robert Lee Thrasher. She is survived by her loving son, Jack Thrasher and his wife Alicia; and her stepdaughters, Delia Thrasher (Tim Madden) and Keira Thrasher. Betsy was a proud and devoted grandmother to Ryder, Vance, Erin, and Ian—each of whom she loved dearly and spoke of often with great pride and affection.

She shared a close bond with her sister, Vicky Grounds (Gary); and her brother, Pat Joyce (Kathie); as well as her nieces and nephews, Annie (Dan), Greg (Beth), Mary Catherine (Jason), and Meg. She was a loving great-aunt to James, Alexandra, Leo, Michael, Maria, Natasha, Ashley, and Emily.

Betsy leaves behind a legacy of generosity, intellect, and quiet strength. She believed in doing the right thing, even when no one was watching, and she instilled those values in those she loved. Her memory will be a blessing to all who knew her.

A memorial will be held from 12:00pm to 3:00pm, with funeral service at 2:30pm, Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.

Interment will be private.
