Dana Alan Selpien, age 78, of Belvidere, IL, passed away on August 9, 2025. He was born June 1, 1947 in Elgin, IL to his loving parents, Richard and Irene (née Petersdorf) Selpien.

Dana graduated from Dundee Community High School, Class of 1967, before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was stationed with Battery A, 1st Battalion, and 92nd Artillery Unit during the Vietnam War.

On August 1, 1970, Dana married the love of his life, Catherine Zuilek. Together they built a life filled with devotion and joy until her passing in July, 2022.

Dana was a man who found happiness in simple pleasures. He loved riding his bike and visiting with neighbors, always ready for a friendly conversation or a helping hand. A devoted member of the Belvidere Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, Dana lived his faith through kindness and service.

In recent years, Dana dedicated much of his time to volunteering at the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry. He especially enjoyed working in the garden there, often bringing his own weed wacker to ensure the lawn was well cared for—because, in his mind, “it just wasn’t getting the attention it needed.”

Dana’s life was marked by humility, quiet strength, and a deep sense of duty to his family, his community, and his country. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Dana was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Catherine (née Zuilek) Selpien; infant brother, Steven Selpien; sister, Julia Hoffman; niece, Stephanie Siers; and sister-in-law, Pam Streff. He is survived by his siblings, Gail Hammel, Rickey (Kathryn) Selpien, Kinney (Laurie) Selpien, and Don (Lisa) Selpien; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be 5:00pm to 9:00pm, Friday, August 15, 2025, and 9:30am until funeral service at 10:30am, Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.

Interment with military honors to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 U.S. Hwy. 20, Elgin, IL 60120.
