Clarence Russell, age 94, of Elgin, IL, passed away on January 13, 2026. He was born March 30, 1931 in Birmingham, AL to his loving parents, Clarence and Fannie (née Holmes) Russell.
Clarence was married to the love of his life, Leora, for 56 years until her passing in August, 2017. Their enduring partnership was a testament to devotion and deep companionship.
For 57 years, Clarence worked as a skilled furniture refinisher, breathing new life into worn pieces with care and pride. His passion for restoration extended beyond work—he found joy in tending his garden and bringing beauty into the world, one piece of wood or bloom at a time.
Clarence was known for his warm, contagious laugh and his love for dogs, who always seemed to sense his kind spirit. He had a gentle way with animals and people alike, and his presence brought comfort to those around him.
He will be remembered not only for his craftsmanship, but for the joy he brought to everyday life, and the love he shared so freely.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leora Russell; son, Clarence Russell Jr; and goddaughter, Makeya Evans. He is survived by son, Renae Russell; brother, Willie “Bone” George; nieces and nephews, Evelyn Stockley, Valerie Hildreth, Junior Walker, Tina Dewalt, Rodney Dewalt, and Johnny Dewalt; and special friend, with thanks, Doris Rayfield.
Visitation will be 10:00am until funeral service at 11:00am, Friday, January 30, 2026, at Progressive Baptist Church, 305 Ann Street,Elgin, IL 60120. Pastor Charles A. Ramsey will be officiating.
Interment to follow at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Boulevard, Elgin, IL 60120.
