Bruce James McGowan, age 82, of Elgin, IL, passed away on September 23, 2023. He was born October 29, 1940 in Oak Park, IL to his loving parents, James and Lucille (née Schultz) McGowan.
After high school graduation in 1958, Bruce immediately joined the United States Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Independence aircraft carrier as a photographer. He served honorably for three years before transferring into the Naval Reserve in 1961.
After his military service, Bruce attended the University of Montana, earning a BA in 1965, and then a Masters of Arts in 1967. He was recruited from the university into the CIA as a Russian translator, stationed in London. After a few years, he completed his work for the CIA, and worked as a proofreader and typesetter for several companies before retiring in 2007.
Bruce met his wife Connie through family friends. They were married for 48 wonderful years.
Bruce had a quick wit and a great sense of humor. You never knew what was going to come out of his mouth! He loved to play cards and do crossword puzzles, and he was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Connie McGowan; son, Kevin McGowan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private.
