Roger Wayne Ahrens, age 71, of West Dundee, IL, passed away on October 16, 2021. He was born July 13, 1950 in Elgin, IL to his loving parents, Edwin and Ina Mae Ahrens (née Horton).

Roger faithfully served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He earned several medals and commendations prior to his honorable discharge, including the Expert Rifle Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Combat Action Ribbon.

Roger met his wife, Diane, when they were both serving at the Marine Corps Recuit Depot in Parris Island, SC; she was Marine Military Police, and he was a senior drill instructor. They were married for 41 years.

Roger and Diane later became co-owners of the Piece-A-Cake Bakery in East Dundee, which they owned for 25 years. He was a diligent and hardworking baker, rising early each morning to bake danishes and cinnamon rolls. In 2004, he and Diane started the Operation Sweet Tooth initiative, sending boxes of cookies to U.S. servicemen and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also served as both a trustee and Village President of East Dundee, IL.

Roger was a very supportive husband and a strong, good father. He had a beautiful dry sense of humor and loved Jesus. He enjoyed watching “Gibbs” on NCIS, as well as Blue Bloods, even if the episode was a rerun. A wonderful highlight of his later years was when he was able to participate in an Honor Flight in 2016 to visit the veteran memorials in Washington, D.C. He loved to support fellow veterans through Operation Sweet Life, a nonprofit in West Dundee, IL dedicated to assisting veterans and their families.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Timothy. He is survived by his wife, Diane May Hallows Ahrens; children, David (Miho) Clukey, Daniel Clukey, Zachariah W. Ahrens, Daisy C. (ex-husband Tony) Janish, Sean Ahrens, Violet (AJ) Rooker, and Isaac Ahrens; siblings, Rebecca (Ken) Gibson, Mark (Carolyn) Ahrens, Martha Clark, Liz (Tom) Keel, Mary (Tim) Promenschenkel, Paul Ahrens, and Peter (Becky) Ahrens; grandchildren, David Clukey, Jr., Mary Clukey, Amelia Sharp, Azalea Pinedo, Logan Janish, Linden Rooker, Silas Rooker, Solomon Rooker, and Able Rooker.
