Richard M. Hulke, age 90, of Elgin, passed away after a brief illness on March 14, 2019 at JourneyCare Center in Barrington, IL.

Richard “Dick” was born August 2, 1928 in Courtland, MN to his loving parents, Wilhelm and Dorathea Hulke (nee Todt).

After moving to the Elgin area, Dick met and married Jeanette Krueger in 1954.  Together they raised three children, Leah Rae, Randal Wane and Jildora Sue, until Jeanette’s death in 1968.

Dick later married Margie Ellen Dillingham, blending their two families.  This April would have marked their 50th wedding anniversary.

Dick served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953.  He had a strong work ethic and worked as a butcher at Gromers of Elgin, at Surge Milking Machines, Adams Auto Parts, Horce Dodge and as a mechanic at Illinois Bell.

Following his retirement in 1990, Dick served Elgin area families as an invaluable team member at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home for twenty years. Dick assisted with every aspect of the funeral business, ultimately serving hundreds of local families.

Dick will be remembered as a kind Christian man who cared for others.  He served as an usher at Elgin Church of the Nazarene.  He was beloved by many for his ability to make people laugh and for his memorable mannerisms. He loved going out to eat and joking with his servers. In his free time he enjoyed playing cards and rooting for the Chicago Cubs.  His lifelong dream came true when they won the 2016 World Series.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Margie Hulke; children, Jildora “Jill” Hulke of Elgin, Randal (Diane) Hulke of Plymouth, MN, Leah Rae (Charles Hettema) Hulke Hettema, of Fairfax, VA, and Sandy Kay (Rick Yarmouth) Peavey Adams of Elgin; sister Doloris Sterba of St. Charles; grandchildren Stanley Adams, Star (Matt) West, Ken (Korine) Adams, Jennie Hettema, Daniel (Florence) Hettema, Chris (Holly) Hulke, Mandy (Daniel Choi) Hulke, Marnie (Kevin) Peavey Johnson, Randi Jo Peavey and Kyle Peavey; and great-grandchildren Payton Pena, Alyssa Adams, Hailey Adams, Maddox Magoon, and Rose Adams.

Dick was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette;  brothers William Hulke, Walter Hulke, Larry Hulke, Irvin Hulke, Raymond Hulke, Stanley Hulke, Wesley Hulke, and Delbert Hulke; sisters Helen Walters, Erna Lindorfer, Aleta Lunz, Marcella Hulke, Dorothy Olson, Lorraine Humbracht, and Ruth Pogoda; stepson Randy Peavey; and granddaughters Christine Marie Hettema and Tressa Peavey.

Visitation will be 5:00p.m to 9:00p.m. Friday, March 22, 2019 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St., Elgin IL 60120. Visitation will continue 10:00a.m. until time of service at 11:00a.m. at Elgin Church of the Nazarene, 12N101 Berner Rd, Elgin, IL 60120, Pastor Danny Taylor and Rev. David Ludwig officiating. Interment with full military honors to follow at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd., Elgin IL 60120.
