Richard “Sal” Louis Selpien, age 90, of Carpentersville, Illinois, passed away at Presence St. Joseph Hospital on October 21, 2015.  He was born on December 7, 1924 in Elgin to the loving parents of Louis and Mabel Selpien.

Richard served in the U.S. Army during World War II driving tanks in the 32nddivision.  Following his service, Richard met the love of his life, Irene Petersdorf, at the Rialto Theater in Elgin.  They married on January 29, 1945.  Richard and Irene purchased their home in Carpentersville in 1959, and together raised seven children. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather who will be missed by his family.

Richard worked for 38 years at Kinney Electric in Elgin.  In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing in the Fox River, long walks exploring Elgin and Dundee, and bowling with friends.  He was a committed volunteer at the Elgin Senior Center who enjoyed meeting new people.  Country western films were his favorite, especially those starring John Wayne.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; son, Steven Phillip; brother Edward Selpien; grandson, Brian Hammel; and great-granddaughter Stephanie Siers.

Richard is survived by two daughters, Julia Hoffman of Carpentersville and Gail (Ray) Hammel of Kokomo, Indiana; four sons, Dana (Catherine) of Belvidere, Rickey (Kathryn) of South Elgin, Kinney (Laurie) of Lake in the Hills, and Donald (Lisa) of Rockton; nine grandchildren, Albert (Christy) Hammel, Randy Hammel, Jerry (Monica) Hammel, Jennifer (Bill) Wolfe, Jody Siers, Jamie (Tim) Smolen, Rebecca (Scott) Selpien-Kickbusch, and Heather Selpien, Andrew Selpien, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, October 26, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin.  Visitation will continue on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with services at 11:00 a.m. at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, Rev. Linda Jeske officiating.  Interment to follow at Dundee Township East Cemetery, 420 Dundee Ave, Dundee.
