O. Dale Gardner, age 91, passed away on March 12, 2014 at his home in Elgin, IL. He was born on Nov 5, 1922 to the loving union of Albert and Eva (Hamblen) Gardner in Tuscola Township, Illinois.
Dale graduated from Tolona High School, Class of 1939, and served as a Marine Corps CPL. During WWII, he was stationed outside of Nagasaki, Japan ten days after the atomic bomb,exploded. He oversaw the prisoner of war exchange, and returned to the states to finish his time in service as an airplane mechanic. He worked at Woodruff and Edwards, Elgin, as the foreman of the brass department. He started Gardner Builders in the 1970’s. He was a lifelong member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 799.
He is survived by his daughters Theresa D. Annis and Phyllis (Robert) Rudolph, his son Jay (Barbara) Gardner, 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, his brother, A. Lee Gardner, and many nephews and nieces
Preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Ethel Mae, a daughter, Valerie Dale, brothers Ralph and Paul, and his sisters Dorothy Lorentz and Mae Carter.
Visitation Monday Mar 17, 2014 from 12:00PM to 4:00 PM with Military honors rendered at 3:00 PM at Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St. Elgin, Illinois 60120. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National World War II Memorial Fund.
