Mary Erdmann Sauer, age 94, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2014 in Oregon, Wisconsin, surrounded by her loving family, and listening to the music of which she was so fond of. Mary was born on December 15, 1920, in Waukesha, WI, to the loving parents of Franz “Frank” and Augusta Erdmann.
The family lived a short time in Oconomowoc before relocating to Elgin, IL for work at the Elgin Watch Co. Mary attended Elgin High School in 1939. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she met her husband-to-be, Delmont. Following high school, Mary worked for Block and Kuhl Department Store at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, until marrying Del on November 20, 1941. They would remain married for just under 53 years until Del’s death in 1994. They were blessed with eight children, raising them during some of the best times and some of the worst times in our nation’s history. At the beginning, she was on her own, like so many others, as Del served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mary devoted her life to her husband and children, making a home they all adored.
Mary enjoyed cooking and baking, and everyone was the better for it. She greatly enjoyed music of all genres, and instilled in her children the appreciation of music, and encouraged participation. She especially enjoyed singing, and could be heard singing at most any time, no matter the situation. She was fond of helping those less fortunate, by baking or by giving clothing, or by giving whatever was within her means. Mary and Del saw their eight children through a myriad of sports, school programs, activities, special events and everyday ups and downs. All holidays, especially Christmas, were special in the Sauer household. She created so many memories and traditions that live on.
Mary is survived by her eight children: Judith (Robert) Holmes, James (Dawn) Linda (David) Hopper, Robert (Cheryl) Mary, Kathy (Wayne) Ruiter, Scott (Carmen) Elizabeth (Douglas) Chase, twenty grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her loving husband of 53 years, Delmont Paul Sauer; five sisters Ella Huckstedt, Helen Brockman, Meta (Mitzi) O’Rourke, Arlene Mailler her four brothers Arthur, Frank, Carl and Stanley; Infant siblings, Harold and Jeanette; Toddler sister Beatrice Nieces Beatrice Sellars, Shirley Keegan and Phyllis Bethke, and nephew James O’Rourke.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Sienna Meadows, and St. Jude Hospice Care.
