Mary Duffy, age 91, of South Elgin, passed away at home on November 12, 2016. She was born in Altenkundstadt, Germany on March 25, 1925 to Michael and Kunigunda Finzel.

Mary graduated as Valedictorian from St. Charles High School, Class of 1943. She worked as an administrative secretary at McGraw-Edison, as the owner of an Alcoholics Anonymous Rehabilitation Facility for ten years and as City Clerk for Calistoga, CA for nine years.

Mary’s greatest joy in life was welcoming new babies into her family. She had a generous heart, and never hesitated to open her home to family and friends. She will be remembered for her kind listening ear and desire to help anyone in need.

In her free time, Mary enjoyed reading, board games, playing cards, and scrabble. She was a talented chef and baker. She also loved cooking special dishes at the request of family and friends, including her famous potato salad and homemade soups. She looked forward to baking and decorating sugar cookies during the holidays.

She treasured time with family, including her 90th birthday celebration and a special month-long trip to Germany to visit relatives in 1999.

Mary was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rohlwing.

Mary is survived by her two daughters, Connie Rohlwing, of South Elgin and Donata Katalina, of Millersville, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Jeff (Cathy) Rohlwing, Todd (Susan) Rohlwing, Darren (Kathy) Rohlwing, Tami (Dave) Buttrum, Randy (Carri) Smith, Lisa Rizzo, and Angela Katalina; great-grandchildren, Danielle (Josue) Morales, Samantha Rohlwing, Lauren Cobb, Brandon Rohlwing, Hailey Buttrum, Mary Rohlwing, Nathanael Rohlwing, Sam Rohlwing, Eric Rizzo, Jessica Rizzo, Trevor Thomas, Joshua Smith, Hannah Smith, Karine Katalina, and Aidan Ebersole; and great-great-grandchildren Cameron Elam, Chloe Elam, Alexis Morales, Bella Morales, Treyton Floyd and London Gray.

Visitation will be 4:00p.m. til time of service at 7:00p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin, IL 60120, Rev. Frederich Hannibal officiating.
