Julia J. Hoffman, age 72, of Carpentersville, Illinois, passed away at Advocate Sherman Hospital on Friday, May 26, 2017.  She was born on May 5, 1945 in Elgin to the loving parents of Richard and Irene Selpien.

Julia was a Dundee Community High School graduate, class of 1963.  She spent several years doing factory work, but later in her adult life found her true calling as a caregiver for both children and seniors.  She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be missed by her family.

She was an avid Bingo player at the Carpentersville VFW post 5915, where she was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary; and the Dundee Township Park District where she was a member of the 50 Plus Social Club, as well as at the South Elgin Lions Club and several other local facilities.  She was a committed volunteer at Parkview Elementary school where her grandchildren attended. In her spare time, she crocheted hundreds of sleeping mats for the homeless out of recycled plastic bags.  She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Carpentersville where she enjoyed spending time with her church family.

Julia was preceded in death by both of her parents, Richard and Irene Selpien; a brother, Steven Phillip; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Siers.

Julia is survived by three daughters, Jennifer (Bill) Wolfe of Carpentersville, Jody Siers of Carpentersville, and Jamie (Tim) Smolen of Oregon, Illinois; five siblings, Dana (Catherine) of Belvidere, Gail (Ray) Hammel of Kokomo, Indiana, Rick (Kathryn) of South Elgin, Kinney (Laurie) of Lake in the Hills, and Donald (Lisa) of Rockton; eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and four expected grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, June 5, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin.  Visitation will continue on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with services at 12:00 p.m. at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, Rev. Linda Jeske officiating.  Interment to follow at Dundee Township East Cemetery, 420 Dundee Ave, Dundee.
