Joan Wilson, age 78, of Elgin, passed away on October 22, 2020. Joan was born July 20, 1942, in Chicago, IL to her loving parents, Michael Szady and Jean (Genevieve) Przebieda.

Joan graduated from William Howard Taft High School, Class of 1960. She worked as a lifeguard for the Chicago Park District, and as a carhop at a hotdog stand, and ran the family business, Wilson Window Cleaning. Eventually she landed a job at Wal-Mart where she worked for 25 years, and where her co-workers became great friends.

One of Joan’s claims to fame was that she personally knew the writer of Grease.

Joan loved to garden and spend time with family. She was also a great cook. She loved to cook for her family, making wonderful dishes like homemade chicken soup and Thanksgiving dinners (especially her stuffing).

Joan also enjoyed celebrating birthdays, and made wonderful homemade birthday cakes.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wilson; sons, Dion Wilson and Derrick Wilson; sister, Loretta Szady; and brothers, John Szady and Thomas Szady.

Joan is survived by her children, Donna (Shane) Wagnaar, Darren (Christine) Wilson, Wayne (Tami) Wilson, and Doreen Wilson; brothers, Edward Szady and James Szady; grandchildren, Brittany (Michael) Ingargiola, Eric Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Anthony (Krystal) Wagnaar, Nehemiah Wagnaar, Micah Wagnaar, Anamarie Wagnaar, Miriam Wagnaar, Grant Wagnaar, Samantha Wilson, Kirstin Nicosia, and Kaylee Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5:00pm, Friday, October 30, 2020 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.

Mourners are encouraged to review the funeral home COVID-19 public health policies ahead of time. Face masks are required to enter the facility.

  1. Even tho we really never stayed in contact, Aunt Joan will be missed by all. My Condolences to all my cousins. I hope you will understand that I won’t be there to support you during these trying times. But you all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

  2. Mrs Wilson was the greatest. From taking all of us kids to see Jaws then Dion Darren and myself in our baseball days to working for the family business. Mrs Wilson Always treated us as one of her own. I have many fond memories with my long time friends that became family…She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
