Joan Leonard, 88, of St. Charles passed away at her home on February 20, 2021 surrounded by her five loving children.

Joan was born and raised in Barrington, IL with her sister, Carol. She attended the University of Illinois in Champaign where she majored in Education. While there, she caught the eye of her future husband, Robert Leonard, at a Sigma Pi fraternity mixer and the two were blissfully married for 54 years until Bob’s passing in 2006.

Joan dedicated her married life to her family, first in North Aurora and then St. Charles. Her professional passion was swimming instruction as a certified Water Safety Instructor; she taught thousands of children in her backyard pool over the course of 50 years, including this past summer.

Joan was an active member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Geneva and very involved in the community. She co-founded the Fox Valley Alumnae Club of Alpha Gamma Delta (serving as vice president) and donated her time to the Kiwanis Club and Lazarus House. One of the few times she could sit still was on the lanai of her Kona condominium to watch the whales pass by.

In addition to her five children, Jeff (Nancy), Peter (Sabine), John, Jennifer Comperda (Ken) and Perry (Jean), Joan is survived by eight (and a half) grandchildren and three (and a half) great grandchildren.

A private service is planned for Friday, February 26. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lazarus House of St. Charles or the Kiwanis Club of St. Charles.

Final arrangements entrusted to Symonds-Madison Funeral Home. For more information, call 847-741-1128 or visit

  1. I am so proud to say that my life was blessed for my acquaintance with Joan. She was the strongest person I have ever known. Strong in everything she did but mostly in her strong love for everyone and thing around her. She was an inspiration for me, I only hope I can demonstrate love the way she did.

  2. My dearest friend Joan of 67 years will be missed by her family, friends, Kiwanis, Lazarus House, swimming students through the years and most of all ….her untiring spirit of helping people, dedicated to the community and loving her family…….
Her husband Bob Leonard and my Charlie were best of friends having met at the University of Illinois and becoming members of the same fraternity. The four of us had more fun in all those years with going to football games, basketball games, visiting Kona a number of times and truly adored the family….Charlie gave the eulogy at Bob’s Memorial Service….they will be remembered in our hearts forever…..Love and sympathy to the Leonard family…God Bless All…..Blanche

  3. Remembering her from Georgia with love and affection.

  4. So many happy memories I have with Joan. the hours we spend at Norris together and also the many times fellowshipping outside of the pool. Her infectious laugh and ready smile characterized her. She will be missed.
