Jerry S. Gentry, age 84, of Elgin, passed away on November 21, 2015, in Elgin. He was born in Mt. Vernon, Illinois on May 27, 1931 to the loving parents of Edd and Bessie Gentry.
Jerry was a singer, songwriter and poet, who performed as part of a small folk band. He was an honored guest musician of the Grand Ole Opry. Jerry spent his early years in Tennessee, later settling in Elgin. He worked at Elgin’s CR Industries, retiring after 30 years of service. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling the world, including to Rome, Cairo and Jerusalem. As a devoted Christian and follower of Jesus Christ, Jerry had a generous heart devoted to service. He served his community as a U.C.T. member, by volunteering at local interfaith events and at the Association for Independent Development on Bowes Road. His loving heart will be missed by family and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Holland, Therese Minor, Bertha King, and Pauline Hodgson, ; and his brothers, Abe, Ralph and Edward-Charles Gentry. Niece Joyce Gentry-Wyatt.
Jerry is survived by his nephews, Jim Holland, Jerry Overby, and Robert Gentry, his nieces, Donna Pierce, Teresa Ann Minor.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 25, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Services 7:00 PM with Rev. Tom Severson officiating at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin, IL. Interment will be 2:30 PM on Monday Nov 30, 2015 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery Rt. 2 Dahlgren, IL 62828. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to The Vineyard Church of Elgin.
