Irene M. Dungey, age 98, of Elgin, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2019 at The Vines in Elgin, IL.  Irene was born May 16, 1921 in Somers, Iowa, the daughter of Otto Baker and Bessie Evelyn (Malohn) Baker.

Irene moved to Hollandale, Minnesota, with her parents in 1928 from Rockwell City, Iowa.  She attended second grade through eighth grade at Maple Island grade school.

Irene graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1939.  She married Lynn E. Dungey December 2, 1939, and together they had four sons.  They lived in West Union, Iowa, for their first year of marriage.

Then Lynn went with the U.S. Army’s 34th Division from Austin to Camp Clayborn, Louisiana, and then activated for Europe on December 7, 1941, serving in Ireland, North Africa and Italy during World War II. During this time, Irene lived in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and she worked at Wilson Meat Packing Plant.

After the war, Lynn worked at Interstate for about a year before he was called back into service, and they both moved to Fort Carson, Colorado. They later lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Japan, and Kansas. After retirement they lived in Illinois, Kansas, California, and Minnesota.  Later she lived in Arkansas before moving to The Vines in Elgin, IL, where she passed away.

Irene was very active in her church, especially the Women’s Missionary Union, wherever she lived.  She served on the Executive Board of the State of Kansas and Nebraska Southern Baptist Convention as well as the Minnesota/Wisconsin Southern Baptist Convention.

Mrs. Dungey enjoyed traveling with her husband and visiting family.  She also was an avid letter writer.

Irene is survived by her four sons, Ronald Eugene (Joan), Daryl Dean, Merlyn Ray (Mary), and Clifford Lynn (Linda); her sister, Juanita Pepper; 11 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband Lynn, brothers Wayne Otto Baker and Robert Marion Baker, and daughters-in-law Donna and Marsha.

Visitation in Elgin will be 4-6:00p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St., Elgin IL 60120.

Visitation will continue in Bloomington, MN, Monday September 16, 2019 at 10:00a.m. until time of Service at 11:00a.m. at Southtown Baptist Church, Bloomington, MN, Rev. Bob Stocklan officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Minnesota-Wisconsin Baptist Foundation, 519 16th St SE, Rochester, MN  55904.

Interment will follow at 1:00PM at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
