Gary O. Erdman, age 66, of Elgin, passed away on February 22, 2016 at Saint Alexius Medical Center. He was born September 21, 1949 to the loving parents of Gordon and Gertrude Erdman.
Gary graduated from Prospect High School, class of 1967. He studied computer science at Harper College and Roosevelt University. As a computer programmer during the dawn of the computer age, Gary programmed cards for some of the first computers – early devices the size of rooms. He worked for Analysts International Corporation as a programmer for more than 20 years. Throughout his successful computer career, he also worked for Hewlitt-Packard and Brake Parts. Outside of work, Gary was the go-to guy to troubleshoot computer problems for friends and neighbors alike.
Gary will be remembered for his warped sense of humor that could make a room full of people laugh. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching political events on C-SPAN, NCIS and Stargate. He led family book discussions for novels of many genres, including sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and, most recently, novels about werewolves and vampires. He was incredibly devoted to his six grandchildren, always taking time to care for and guide them.
Gary is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his daughters, Melissa (Jon) Young and Jennifer Erdman; his sister, Gwen Erdman; grandchildren Anna, Kathrine, Ashley and T.J., and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Erdman and his grandchildren, Victoria and Chloe.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, February 27, from 6:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin, 60120. Interment will be private. For more information call 847-741-1128 or visit www.symondsmadisonfuneralhome.com.
