Edmund J. Powers, 58, of Elgin, passed away November 7, 2018 at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.  He was born May 23, 1960 in Iowa City, IA, to his loving parents, Edmund M. and Ruth Powers (Brus).

Edmund attended St. Paul’s Catholic Elementary school and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Burlington, IA, Class of 1978.  He went on to attend Southeastern Community College in Burlington and Southern Arkansas University with a degree in Bachelor of Arts.

Edmund spent more than 25 years working in the paint industry as a chemist. He retired from True Value Manufacturing as a Laboratory Manager.

Edmund married the love of his life, Cynthia on March 4, 1995 and they shared 23 wonderful years together.

Loved ones will remember Edmund’s wonderful sense of humor and that he was a kind and caring father who was devoted to his family.

Edmund was a lifelong chess enthusiast and U.S. Chess Federation Champion.  In his free time, he also enjoyed writing poetry and treasured time spent with his granddaughters, Mila and Lydia.

Edmund was preceded in death by his father, Edmund M., and his sister, Connie Kislow.

Edmund is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Powers; children, Anna (Kris) Skrzynski and Darren Baratta; mother Ruth Powers; siblings Victoria (Brian) Wong, Timothy Powers, Linda (Robert) Powers and Brenda (Jody) Nemeth; grandchildren Mila and Lydia Skrzynski; nieces and nephews Keith (Dee) Kislow, Kelly (Rick) Poser, Jillian Kislow, Andrew Wong, Anthony (Jessica) Wong, Colin Wong, Zoltan Nemeth and Autumn Nemeth; and a host of cousins.

Visitation will be 5:00p.m. until 9:00p.m. Sunday November 11, 2018 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin Il. Visitation will continue 10:00a.m. until time of service at 11:00a.m. Monday, November 12, 2018 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, Rev. Robert Camacho officiating.  Interment to follow at Dundee Township Cemetery – East, 420 Dundee Ave, East Dundee, IL  60118.
