Dovie Elizabeth Casmer (Simpson), age 94, passed away and moved on to her spiritual home on September 13, 2018 while in the care of Angela Hospice at Four Chaplains Nursing Center, Westland, Michigan. She was born November 13, 1923 inReadyville, Tennessee to the loving union of John and Eather Simpson (Williams).
Dovie was a devoted wife of 66 years to Harry, who preceded her in death in May, 2014. Dovie was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who was always smiling, friendly to strangers, and one who exhibited a servant attitude to all she met. Dovie initially came to Michigan in 1946 with her childhood friend from Tennessee, Marie Rollins, to work at Eloise Hospital (formerly called Wayne County General Hospital and Infirmary) in Wayne, Michigan. She met Harry William Casmer, became engaged, and started her married life in Wayne, returning to Tennessee frequently over the years to visit friends and family. Dovie came into the Lutheran faith by adult confirmation April 24, 1949 at Emmanuel Lutheran church in Dearborn.
Dovie and Harry lived on Farragut Street in Wayne in the late 40’s and later moved “out to the country” when they built their final family home on North Drive in present day Canton. Dovie and Harry enjoyed many years of fishing in the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron for perch and walleye and enjoyed traveling around the United States, including an extended road trip to Alaska in 1971, many winters in Arizona, and even a cruise to Mexico. Dovie loved to gather with immediate and extended family and friends whenever possible. Dovie was an active member for many years beginning in the 1960’s at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and School in Westland, Michigan.
Dovie is survived by her daughter Sharon (Gentry) Yearout, their children, Joy (Daniel) Symonds, Sarah (Paul) Girard; her son Mark (Carol) Casmer, their children Sydney and Lindsey; daughter-in-law Sue Casmer, her children, Philip (Kimberly), Daniel (Rachel), and Andrew (Janelle); Great-grandchildren include: Zoe, Adele, Myka, Lily, Kennedy, Emily, and Vivienne; and her caregiver for the last four years, Debbie Nikka.
Dovie was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Casmer (5/2014), son, Reverend Frederick Casmer (4/2018) and her siblings, Maggie, Marion, Cecil, Robert, and Paul.
Friends are invited to a visitation on Friday, September, 21, 2018 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Uht Funeral Home, 35400 Glenwood Rd, Westland, MI. Lying in State Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 9:00AM until memorial service at 10:00AM at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35320 Glenwood, Westland, MI, Pastor Craig Birsching officiating. Interment following at Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park, 35667 W Eight Mile Rd, Livonia, MI.
