Dorothy I. Volpp, of Elgin, age 98, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the home of her daughter. She was born on January 27, 1919, in St. Charles, the 6th of 8 children of Charles and Nellie Hultine (nee Eckstrom).
She grew up on Silver Glen farm in St. Charles and graduated from St. Charles High School in1936. Dorothy married Glenn Volpp on September 28, 1940, and they were married 68 years and raised three children. Glenn passed away in 2008. She was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church.
Dorothy enjoyed nature, working in her yard, playing cards and board games, playing the piano, adding to her large menagerie of collectible frogs, helping others, and spending time with her family and friends and babysitting her grandchildren. Some of her favorite charitable activities included delivering Meals on Wheels for 19 years, volunteering at YWCA Y’s Buys Thrift Store, and making cancer pads with her friends at the First Congregational Church in Elgin.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Georgia Gartner of Lutherville, MD and Glenna Vessup of Elgin and by her son Chris of Santa Monica, CA; 5 grandchildren, Timothy (Penny) Ali, Talib (Hye Chin) Ali, Janann (Alex) Ali Becker, John Gartner, and Sandra Beresheim; 7 great-grandchildren, Ashton Ali, Peyton Ali, Clayton Ali, Kimberly Beresheim, William Beresheim, Sanabel Ali, and William Becker; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her 7 siblings: Marion (Tudor) Roberts, Cora (Waldo) Stevens, Elwood (Dorothea) Hultine, Carl (Natalie) Hultine, Chester Hultine, Betty (Leonard) Magill, and Gloria (Donald) Voss.
Dorothy requested that there be no formal services. Her wish was that her family and friends celebrate her life from wherever they are. Memorials may be made in her memory to Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Elgin.
