Donald Martin Swanson, age 81, passed away May 22, 2016. He was born February 16, 1935 in Chicago, IL to Martin Lenus and Maria Elise Johanna (Schonauer) Swanson. He was the last of six children and was born at home.
Donald attended O’Toole Grade School and Harper High School in Chicago, and Chicago Teachers College. He served in the U.S. Air Force, enlisting in the Officers Cadet program. Married the love of his life Natalie of 60 years in 1956. He worked as a pilot for United Airlines retired after 40 years of honorable service as a DC-10 Captain.
He and his family lived in Carol Stream for 30 years, later relocating to a 43-acre farm in Elgin Township, where he mostly raised grandchildren instead of crops.
He had a long career in public service to the citizens of Carol Stream. He served as a volunteer firefighter, Village Mayor, Village Trustee, Planning and Zoning Commission Member and a member of the Du Page County Board. He also was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Master in Carol Stream, serving as a Council member and several committees.
Donald was preceded in death by his siblings, Pearl (Roy) McVeigh, Willard (June), Claris (Maynard King, Paul) Brown, Ralph (Elsie) Swanson, and Marilyn (Grant Wood, Frank) Burgin; and brother-in-law Richard Ivan (Nan) Powell.
Survived are his Loving wife, Natalie Eileen (Powell); son, Kevin Martin; daughters Kim Eileen (Swanson) Ryan and Elizabeth Merry (Peter) Melody; grandchildren, Kaley Alyssa Swanson, Kyle Martin Swanson, Paul Christopher (Jaime) Ryan, Brandon Michael (Caroline) Ryan, Brittany Eileen (Robert) Kosek, Shawn David Ryan, Amanda Elizabeth Melody, and Melissa Rae Melody; great-grandchildren, Bailey Paul and Jacob Garrett Ryan, Olivia Renee Tovar, Robert Michael “R.J.” and Kane Thomas Kosek, Brantley Michael and Avalee Grace Ryan; brother-in-law Curtis Glenn (Margaret) Powell; many beloved nieces, nephews and good friends. Sisters-in-law Elsie (Ralph) Swanson and Nan (Richard) Powell.
Visitation will be from 3:00PM to 8:00PM Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St, Elgin. Visitation will continue Friday, May 27, 2016 from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at Abiding Peace Lutheran Church, 9N976 S Randall Rd, Elgin, and funeral service with military honors will follow at 11:00AM, Rev.
