Joyce Hopper, age 91, of Elgin, IL, passed away on September 9, 2021. She was born January 30, 1930 in Lake Forest, IL to her loving parents, Oscar and Amy Hofflander (née Beerling).
Joyce graduated from Elgin High School, Class of 1948. The following year, she married her high school sweetheart, Delbert Hopper, and they were happily married for 49 years until his death in 1998.
Joyce worked for a time at the Elgin National Watch Company, and also as a K-6th grade librarian, but her primary role was as a homemaker and volunteer. In addition to raising her three children, she volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital and Meals on Wheels, ushered at both The Hemmens and the Elgin Community College’s Theatre, planned many class reunions, sat on her local neighborhood watch committee, and served as secretary to her bowling and golf leagues.
Joyce was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Elgin. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, crafting, baking, and participating in card clubs. She also enjoyed staying active by bowling, golfing, cross-country skiing, biking, traveling, and camping.
Loved ones will remember Joyce as warm hearted, fun, loving, caring, adventurous, empathetic, independent, and energetic, and always with a sense of humor.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Delbert Hopper. She is survived by her children, Diana (Richard) Sowers, David (Linda) Hopper, and Karen (Steve) Schudel; siblings, Shirley (Howard) Minster, and Tymen (Barb) Hofflander; grandchildren, Racheal (Nate) Griffin, Myra (Joe) Becker, Chad (Jennifer) Hopper, Eric (Sarah) Hopper, Kevin (Rikki) Hopper, Carissa (Zach) Shoemaker, and Alex Schudel; and great-grandchildren, Jalen, Peyton, Marissa, Lena, Emelia, Abby, Del, Tre, and Ezra.
A memorial will be held from 11:00am to 1:00pm, Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120.
Mourners are encouraged to review the funeral home COVID-19 public health policies ahead of time.
Interment will be private.
